Is Romelu Lukaku the missing link to Chelsea’s title charge?

Romelu Lukaku marked his return to Chelsea with a top-class performance over the weekend against Arsenal as he got on the score sheet on his debut and proved to be a thorn in the flesh of an Arsenal side who had no answers for the big man.

Lukaku returned to the Chelsea side on the back of a very productive season with Inter Milan, winning the League in the process whilst scoring 24 times and also providing 11 assists.

Lukaku has made big strides since leaving Manchester United for the Italian giants in 2019 and has matured into a complete Center-forward who not only is a consistent goalscorer but also creates for fellow teammates and finishes better. It can be recalled that this was a major issue in his early developmental stage.

The big man all through the game on Sunday was constantly getting involved in play and providing a focal point in attack and linking superbly with fellow attackers in Mason Mount and Kai Havertz.

In most attacking moves in the game, the Chelsea midfielders would try to play in vertical passes into the big striker and then look to attack the spaces the gunners left behind and out wide as a result of the Arsenal defenders attempting to engage Lukaku which provided lots of options and gave the Chelsea attack a new dimension.

The addition of the towering Belgian striker to a Chelsea side that’s gone up a level tactically under manager Thomas Tuchel, could prove a masterstroke/missing link to a Chelsea side who have managed to sort their defensive issues that were a cause for concern under former manager and club legend, Frank Lampard.

The Chelsea side have also been creating lots of chances under Thomas Tuchel and just needed a center-forward who can consistently finish the chances the team creates, something the Chelsea side missed last term.

If the Chelsea team can build on the performance they put out over the weekend against Arsenal, it only means things will get better with more games as the whole team continues to gel together and get used to their £97m signing.

As long as Lukaku continues to get chances in games, the team will always have a chance as he’s not only developed his all-round game over the years but has also shown consistency in terms of finishing as well, comfortable with either foot or even getting on the end of crosses to head home.

The Chelsea side already as it is, is a difficult side to come up against owing to the work Tuchel has done over the past 12 months. The addition of Lukaku to a side already as competitive as this Chelsea side is going to be a nightmare for a lot of teams in the league.

If Chelsea can keep the big striker fit and firing, he’ll decide a lot of games on his own as he has the individual quality to make a difference, and of course, with other attacking inputs from the rest of the team, this Chelsea side have the potentials to go all the way in the league provided they don’t get hit by long-term injuries.

Lukaku has come into a side that already won the Uefa Champions League last term and would be backing themselves to challenge for the League title this term.

On a personal note, I think we can expect big things this term from the Belgium man as he’s coming into a league he already has a wealth of experience in.

He would also be looking to have a big impact similar to the one he had with the Italian giants firing them to a league title for the first time in a decade.

How many goals do you think Lukaku would get in the League this term? Will his impact be enough to push Chelsea in their quest for their 7th Premier League title?
