Manchester United: Title contenders or pretenders?

Manchester United will look to build on their second-place finish in the 2020/2021 season as they finished within touching distance of arch-rivals Manchester City.

The United faithful enjoyed a progressive season last term as they surprisingly found a level of consistency with much improved performances throughout the campaign and even against the top clubs.

This season promises to be a better one after the addition of long-term target Jadon Sancho, Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane and have also agreed a deal to bring back former legend Cristiano Ronaldo subject to an official announcement from the club.

These are the type of signings to make an instant impact and improve the overall level of the team further. Already, the United side poses a fairly strong defense and now with the addition of Varane, we can expect further improvement and stability at the back.

The team with playmakers in Pogba and Fernandes in midfield possesses a nice blend of technicality and flair which will be needed to unlock stubborn defenses in games where teams try to sit deep.

Also in attack, young Mason Greenwood looks to be developing into a reliable goalscorer and his finishing in front of goal has been nothing short of lethal, finding the corners of the net with relative ease and accuracy.

They also have predatory number 9 in Edison Cavani who would contribute his fair share of goals and bring something different to the attack.

Potentially adding Cristiano Ronaldo in my opinion could be the missing piece of the puzzle that finally pushes United over the line in their quest for a league title in over 8 years, the last one coming in Sir Alex Ferguson’s last season at the club.

Ronaldo, as we all know him to be a reliable goalscorer, will look to quickly blend into the side in attack and provide them with the needed cutting edge and of course plenty of goals.

As an accomplished goalscorer, having Ronaldo in this United side would always give them the belief going into games knowing that no matter how difficult it gets, they have an attack that’s capable of scoring goals without needing too many chances.

The obvious issue the United would likely face is having to find the right balance in midfield and attack especially in the team selections.

He has to quickly decide on who to start and also in what games where each of these players can have the biggest impact. This is a scenario where the man-management skills of United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would be tested.

Once United find a formula to get these guys to play together effectively, I think there’ll be nothing stopping them this term in the League and I see them going all the way, as they are a traditional side who have a winning mentality and would be hungry to bring back success to Red side of Manchester.

It’s shaping up to be an interesting season ahead. Does Manchester United have what it takes?

Will they find the consistency and the fighting spirit needed to win games and grind out results when times are hard? We will see, but I know for sure they’ll be up there challenging until the last day.

We’ve seen them grind out one against Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Molineux on Matchday 3, all thanks to the lethal finishing of Mason Greenwood.
