Three possible replacements for Solskjaer as Man United manager

The Premier League saw one of its greatest results on 2021/22 Premier League Matchday 9 although it was one-sided and disgraceful for the home side.

Manchester United were pummeled 5 nil by Liverpool at Old Trafford on the day and the result has shaken Man United fans who now believe that they have seen enough of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the club’s dugout.

There has been a lot of clamors for the Norwegian to be fired as United fans have taken to social media to vent their frustration. The Norwegian just extended his contract at Old Trafford three months ago in a three-year deal.

The former United star nicknamed the baby-faced assassin in his playing days has not landed any silverware for the Red Devils in nearly three years of management.

They finished second in the Premier League last term and it was expected that they would go one better this term especially after the additions of Raphael Varane, Jadon Sancho, and Cristiano Ronaldo.

However, a disastrous run of 5 losses in their last 9 consecutive games has blown away such hopes as the Red Devils sit 7th on the log with 14 points, 8 points off league leaders Chelsea with many big games still to play.

Regardless, here are 5 managers that may replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Old Trafford if he eventually gets the boot.

Antonio Conte

The Italian manager has proven himself as a serial winner since he came into the limelight. It can be recalled how he transformed Chelsea from a side that finished 10th in the Premier League the previous season to league winners the following season in his first season as Chelsea boss.

It can also be recalled how he broke Juventus’ dominance in Serie A last season by winning the league with Inter Milan against all odds. He is without a club but it remains to be seen if he would consider the managerial role at Old Trafford at this point in the season.

Conte is a manager who pays attention to his defense and this is what United need at the moment after keeping just 1 clean sheet in their last 21 games and conceding 11 goals in a week against Leicester City, Atalanta, and Liverpool.

Meanwhile, his penchant for falling out with his superiors is one factor that may work against him if the role at Man United becomes vacant.

Zinedine Zidane

Former Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane is also available having left the role at the Bernabeu. However, there is little concern of Man United being tired of experimenting and settling once and for all for an established manager.

Regardless, the Frenchman proved himself at Real Madrid as he won 2 La Liga titles, and also achieved major successes in the UEFA Champions League. He fits the profile at Man United and it remains to be seen if a Zidane to Man United move would materialize.

Erik Ten Hag

Man United fans want their side to adopt the philosophy of attacking football and this Dutchman perfectly fits the bill considering what he has achieved with Eredivisie giants Ajax.

Erik Ten Hag’s Ajax are a very attacking side and this has been proven by their exploits in the UCL this term in their cruise towards the round of 16, and also with the crazy number of goals scored in the Eredivisie thus far this season.

They thrashed PSV Eindhoven 5 nil in their last league game and hammered Borussia Dortmund 4 nil in their last UCL game. They’ve scored a whopping 37 goals and conceded just 2 in the Eredivisie this season.

It remains to be seen if he would be willing to leave a high-flying Ajax side for a sinking Man United ship at this point of the season. This, of course, depends on if the United hierarchy are willing to part ways with Solskjaer.
