Barcelona star man Lionel Messi has heaped praises on Cristiano Ronaldo whilst insisting he wouldn’t mind playing at Barcelona till the end of his football career.
The projected rivalry between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi has raged on since the Portuguese’s arrival to Real Madrid, although the past nine Ballon D’Or awards have been shared between the two players.
Lionel Messi commended the 32-year old for his efforts on the pitch. Messi told ESPN:
“[The rivalry] is reinforced by the press, not by us,”
“We try to achieve the best every year for our team and what is said outside of that I don’t think is very important.”
“He is a phenomenal player with a lot of quality, who outdoes himself each year.
“The entire world knows, and that is why he is one of the best of the world.”
Lionel Messi still maintained his desire to remain with Barcelona, and it seems like he is close to agreeing on a contract renewal with the club.
“[Staying with Barcelona] is what I have always wanted, what I have always dreamt of”
“I said that I would like to end my career in Barcelona, and we will see if it ends that way.”
He also spoke on international duties as Argentina square off against Brazil on Friday night at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. He also revealed the disappointment the Argentine National team has had to endure due to their failures in recent finals.
“We were close to victory on three occasions [once in the World Cup final, twice in the Copa America final] but we lost due to small details”
“I believe that, in the key moments, we didn’t have the luck to become champions.
“It is not easy to stand up after losing a final and we did it, reaching two more.”
Lionel Messi is eligible for the friendly and can also play a role on the pitch in the upcoming World Cup qualifiers as his suspension was overturned after they appealed.
