Relegation Looms For Luton, Sheffield United and Burnley

The 2023/24 Premier League season has been an exciting one with lots of turns thus far both at the top of the table, the top four places, the Europa League and Europa Conference League positions, as well as the bottom places.

However, one major concern has been the performance of the newly promoted sides from the Championship that gained promotion to the top tier of English club football ahead of the 2023/24 season.

The Sides That Were Promoted For The 2023/24 Season

The three sides that were promoted to the Premier League for the season are Burnley, Luton Town and Sheffield United.

Unfortunately, these three sides currently occupy the bottom 3 places on the log with 10 games to go. Luton Town sit on 18 with 21 points while Sheffield United and Burnley are worse off with 14 points thus far.

In the last 5 games, only one of them has managed a win and it is Sheffield United.

Luton Town has the most wins amongst them with 5 to their name after 28 games whilst Burnley and Sheffield United have managed just two each. In terms of losses, it has been a disaster as it is 20 losses each for Burnley and Sheffield United while Luton Town have lost 17 games.

premier league bottom 3

This is not a welcome development for the standard of football in the Championship and is also a far cry from the newly promoted sides ahead of the 2022/23 season.

The trio of Fulham, Bournemouth, and Nottingham Forest were real spoilers and maintained their places in the Premier League at the end of the season, albeit by whiskers for the latter 2. Fulham, on the other hand, finished in 10th position.

However, this feat seems impossible for the trio of Luton Town, Burnley, and Sheffield United that were promoted ahead of the 2023/24 season.

Can They Survive One More Season in the Premier League?

With ten games to go, even the best of the three, Luton Town, put up a fiasco against a struggling Bournemouth on March 13, 2024, as they took a 3-nil lead at the vitality only to allow the home side to equalize and eventually win the game.

Regardless, all three have not shown the character that indicates that they will be in the Premier League season.

We may likely see a scenario where the three sides that were promoted end up being relegated at the end of the season; A major decline in the performance of promoted sides in comparison to the performance of those promoted ahead of the 2022/23 season.

They Have The International Break To Prepare For What is Coming

Meanwhile, the international break couldn’t have come at a better time as all three teams and their managers can go on a short break and strategize for the remaining 10 games of the season.

Chris Wilder (Sheffield United), Vincent Kompany (Burnley), and Rob Edwards of Luton Town have a huge task when the Premier League returns after the international break in their bid to see their teams remain in the Premier League for at least another season.

Regardless, this is a gargantuan task for all three sides although Luton Town looks like the side that currently have the highest possibility of surviving the drop.

We look forward to seeing how it pans out but I think all three teams may end up returning to the Championship even before or at the end of the season based on the performances they’ve put up thus far.
