A Look Into Chelsea And Spurs' Tussle For The Premier League Title

The English premier league is starting to shape up. Fans and critics of the most popular football league on earth are beginning to get an idea of where the title will end up at the end of the season. 32 games gone into the season and there has been lots of excitement so far. The quality of football this season has been relatively top notch. The ‘relatively’ put there because of the seeming ease with which the league leaders have maintained their run to the potential win of the title not even losing the top spot since their ascension to the top for a very long while.

Going by what we’ve seen so far, the Premier League trophy will be on an English FA sponsored trip from the city of Leicester to the city of London. Where the trophy parade will be holding is still being contested by two very impressive sides from London, who are currently yet to relinquish their form and grit till the deed is done

The Premier League 2016 table will have literally grown tired of a certain London side being in the forefront and monopolizing its top spot for a while. But then, it has no choice because they have deserved it all season long based on their impressive form, consistency, and discipline to ensure they still have their destiny in their hands. Chelsea seem to be in control at the moment. Let me state it categorically, they are in control!

However, the unlikeliest of rivals from North London has been giving them a sustained chase, which really became a cause for concern after their capitulation at Stamford Bridge against Crystal Palace. Only 7 points separate the two teams at the moment, or maybe only 2 losses and a draw for Chelsea and 3 wins in a row for the North London rivals would significantly change the look of the top 2 on the table. Tottenham Hotspur have been very consistent in the last couple of weeks and have shown their dynamism in the absence of their key man, Harry Kane, and have gone on to win convincingly and thrash their opponents in the period of his absence.

The same Spurs ended Chelsea’s impressive 13 games winning streak with a 2 nil defeat at White Hart Lane, stand in their way in their pursuit of the FA cup and also seek to deprive them of the Premier League title, if Chelsea conspires to bottle it. Chelsea have shown they have what it takes to win the title since their loss to Crystal Palace. They haven’t gone on to bottle it as many pundits suggested because of the pressure put on them by their pursuers.

Instead, they went on to beat Guardiola’s Manchester City in a game that even the Chelsea fans thought could spell doom for their title run, and even after Spurs beat Watford convincingly to heap more pressure on them before the game against Bournemouth, they still proved their title credentials as they beat Eddie Howe’s men 3 goals to 1 to maintain the 7 points gap ahead of the last 7 games for both teams. Chelsea are up for it, Spurs are also up for it. An exciting prospect to look out for in these last weeks.

Let’s take a look at the remaining fixtures for both sides:

CHELSEA still have 7 games. 4 home and 3 away. The home fixtures are against Southampton, Middlesbrough, Watford and Sunderland. These sides could prove to be the proverbial spoilers. Their away games include tough encounters against Everton, Manchester United and West Brom. Everton and Man United have a bone to pick against Conte’s men. The recent ‘no love lost’ (maybe I’m being too critical), between Mourinho and Chelsea is no secret, so the Blues will have to step up this weekend and in their subsequent away games to ensure the title returns to Stamford Bridge.

TOTTENHAM have 6 consecutive wins in the EPL. A decent run of form! They have home games against Arsenal, Manchester United and Bournemouth, with away games against Leicester City, West Ham, Hull City and Crystal Palace. Spurs still have much work to do to surmount Chelsea and they’ve proven they can. It’s left to see how they navigate these fixtures.

With respect to the remaining games and their current run of form, Chelsea seem to be favorites unless they let complacency creep in. The pursuit of Tottenham will definitely keep them on their feet. Kudos to Eden hazard and Dele All whose impacts have made sure their sides are still in it for the title. Let’s see who goes on till the end.
