Barcelona president Joan Laporta has revealed that new signing Sergio Aguero is playing his part by helping to convince Lionel Messi to sign a new contract at Camp Nou.
Messi’s current contract will expire on June 30 and the Argentine is set to become a free agent if he refuses to renew with Barcelona.
According to Laporta., the club are doing their best to make Messi commit his future to them and remain in La Liga after a season that was plagued with reports of his desire and threats to leave.
“I would like Messi to tell us ‘yes’ as soon as possible. He would help us in every way,” Laporta told La Vanguardia.
He added that “Aguero is helping. He is telling him every day to stay” and “in communication with “[Messi] every other day.”
Regardless, Laporta remains confident that the two parties would come to an agreement and that a deal would be struck despite the troubling financial times at the club.
He continued: “He is excited and I am grateful to him for the desire he is showing to stay.”
Meanwhile, Barcelona have made some acquisitions ahead of the 2021/22 season in Sergio Aguero, Emerson Royal, Eric Garcia, and Memphis Depay. Despite these signings, the club president has promised to sign three or four more players.
“There will be three or four more signings,” he said. “We are creating a very competitive team. We’re already seeing it with the arrivals of Garcia, Aguero, Emerson, and as well as other players who are ready.”
