Chelsea boss Frank Lampard wants to sign Dries Mertens this transfer window but now faces competition from Inter Milan for the Napoli striker.
Lampard is looking to use some of his £150million transfer budget to sign Mertens before the window shuts, and a report from Gianluca Dimarzio suggests that the Blues have already made contact.
Dries Mertens, 32, is in the final year of his contract with Napoli and is not expected to sign a new deal. As a free agent in June, he can negotiate with clubs that are presently interested in him. Chelsea are looking for another forward to complement Tammy Abraham following Spurs’ interest in Olivier Giroud, alongside Michy Batshuayi’s current struggle for form.
According to CalcioMercato, Inter chief Giuseppe Marotta is preparing to sanction a move for Mertens. The Belgian has been in great form for Napoli this season having scored 9 goals and provided 4 assists in 22 appearances in all competitions for Napoli.
If the Blues manage to sign Mertens, he can be deployed alongside Tammy Abraham as he can play as a winger or striker. Meanwhile, he is currently on the sidelines and working his way to recovery from an adductor injury.
“I am working hard to return as soon as possible,” Mertens said.
“I can no longer keep away from the field, but I thank the physio and the medical staff for helping me to return as soon as possible.”
Mertens joined Napoli from Eredivisie giants PSV in 2013 and has gone on to score 118 goals and provide 71 assists in 304 games for Napoli.
