Drinkwater’s Villa loan spell could be cut short after headbutting teammate

Danny Drinkwater’s career could be plunged into further crisis as Aston Villa are considering cutting short his loan spell from Chelsea after a training ground bust-up with winger Jota. According to Daily Mail, Drinkwater headbutted Jota during a furious exchange at Bodymoor Heath on Tuesday.

Dean Smith reportedly sent the 30-year-old home after the incident and he’ll likely be fined for his part in the altercation. Therefore, Villa are reportedly considering whether to end his loan spell or not.

It can be recalled that Drinkwater was one of the highly sought after midfielders in England after Leicester’s Premier League triumph in May 2016, before he made the move to Chelsea a year later.

Since then, his career has been on a decline. Burnley terminated his loan spell from Chelsea in January after he made just 2 appearances in six months.

The player has also been on the headlines for the wrong reasons in recent times. It can be recalled that he was attacked on a night out in Manchester in September. Meanwhile, this incident is coming at the worst time for Dean Smith whose position is under scrutiny after a woeful run of form.

According to The Telegraph, a heavy defeat against Frank Lampard’s Chelsea on Saturday could see Dean Smith lose the job. Villa have lost their last 5 games in all competitions and sit 19th in the Premier League with 10 games to go.
