Europe Goalkeeper Rankings

Best Goalkeepers in the World in 2022

The game of football has evolved rapidly over the last decade, thereby, raising the standard of what is expected from professional players and coaches.

The game has evolved to a point where carrying out your primary responsibility as a footballer won’t cut it at the highest level. Meanwhile, see some factors we’ll consider below during the 2021/22 season for our ranking of the best goalkeepers in the world.

For our ranking, we are taking note of the goalkeepers based on the number of teams that make it to Europe from the leagues. The Bundesliga, Premier League, Serie A, and La Liga have 4 slots in Europe so we consider the goalkeepers in the top 4 positions from those leagues.

The French Ligue 1 has two slots. Therefore, we’re considering the top two best goalkeepers in Ligue 1.

Our list of the best goalkeepers in the world has some notable absentees as it is based on season-oriented stats as well as how these goalkeepers have performed for their sides between the sticks. Top goalkeepers like Jan Oblak, Andre Ter Stegen, and Gianluigi Donnarumma, amongst others, are all missing. Maybe, they would make it to the list next season.

Meanwhile, our 2022 ranking for the best goalkeepers in the world covers the top 4 performing goalies from the major leagues in European football. The top performers make the cut and their numbers are there to show why they made it in comparison to those who didn’t.

Some factors we’ll consider for our best goalkeepers in the world ranking 2022

We’ll be relying on data from some reputable stats sources amongst others.

  • The saves metric seems outdated in recent times
  • Keepers selected from Europe’s top 6 leagues
  • Number of clean sheets
  • Number of Appearances
  • Man of the Match awards
  • Expected quality of chances faced to goals conceded. This is arguably an impossible stat to come by at a comprehensive level but we’ll do what we can.
  • Passing ability; Long-range and short-range and how comfortable they are with possession of the ball.

A goalkeeper’s primary role is to make saves and prevent the ball from hitting the back of the net, thereby increasing his side’s chances of coming out tops in a game. This was the major concern for managers when they went about, in their bid to sign quality shot-stoppers and also in deciding who is the best goalkeeper in the world.

A significant number of tactical managers have emerged in recent years such as Pep Guardiola, Jurgen Klopp, Maurizio Sarri, Brendan Rodgers, Thomas Tuchel, and Marcelo Bielsa, amongst others.

These managers boast a well-devised pattern of playing amongst them and they also treat the game as a science. Therefore, the goalkeepers of the team they manage have to do more than just make saves and it has become a thing amongst various clubs in Europe and across the world, and even in international football.

Fans have bought into the philosophy of deciding the best goalkeeper in the world and there is now a need for a piece that addresses the issue of the best goalkeeper in the world ranking in 2022 in this regard.

In an era where playing out from the back is the new wine of the game, the goalkeeper has become the first initiator of some of the attacks that a team launches.

A goalkeeper who wants to be considered the best goalkeeper in Europe 2021 now has to know how to control the ball, play short passes, play accurate long passes, know where to launch a pass, and learn composure even during a press from opposition players amongst others.

Meanwhile, speaking about who is the best goalkeeper in the world in 2021, our ranking considers only the clubs in the top 5 leagues in Europe based on the UEFA Country Coefficients System.

The Leagues we’ll be considering for our top 18 best keepers in Europe 2022, as well as the best goalkeeper in Champions League 2022, include:

  • The Premier League
  • Spanish La Liga
  • Serie A
  • Bundesliga
  • Ligue 1

We’ve seen various best goalkeepers in the world rankings described as lopsided as the goalkeepers in the small sides are not considered.

Well, very little can be done about this. It’s a no-brainer that these shot-stoppers in the small sides usually have the highest number of saves and fewer clean sheets due to the quality of opponents they face, especially the newly promoted sides.

One major highlight was in the 2020/21 Premier League season where West Bromwich Albion’s Sam Johnstone made the most saves with 166, followed by Sheffield United’s Aaron Ramsdale and Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez with 147 and 142 respectively. However, the first two were relegated to the Championship with the clubs at the end of the season.

However, a look at the clean sheet stats saw Premier League Champions Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson Moraes come out tops with a whopping 19 to his name. Therefore, the save metrics don’t really count for much when deciding on the best goalkeepers in the world.

Regardless, we’re looking forward to the  2021/22 season to see the goalies that make our list and lead our top 10 best keeper in Europe 2022 ranking as well as the best goalkeepers in the world ranking 2022.
