A goalkeeper’s primary role is to make saves and prevent the ball from hitting the back of the net, thereby increasing his side’s chances of coming out tops in a game. This was the major concern for managers when they went about, in their bid to sign quality shot-stoppers and also in deciding who is the best goalkeeper in the world.
A significant number of tactical managers have emerged in recent years such as Pep Guardiola, Jurgen Klopp, Maurizio Sarri, Brendan Rodgers, Thomas Tuchel, and Marcelo Bielsa, amongst others.
These managers boast a well-devised pattern of playing amongst them and they also treat the game as a science. Therefore, the goalkeepers of the team they manage have to do more than just make saves and it has become a thing amongst various clubs in Europe and across the world, and even in international football.
Fans have bought into the philosophy of deciding the best goalkeeper in the world and there is now a need for a piece that addresses the issue of the best goalkeeper in the world ranking in 2023 in this regard.
THE BEST BTTS PREDICTIONS FOR TODAY
In an era where playing out from the back is the new wine of the game, the goalkeeper has become the first initiator of some of the attacks that a team launches.
A goalkeeper who wants to be considered the best goalkeeper in Europe 2022/23 now has to know how to control the ball, play short passes, play accurate long passes, know where to launch a pass and learn composure even during a press from opposition players amongst others.
Meanwhile, speaking about who is the best goalkeeper in the world in 2021, our ranking considers only the clubs in the top 5 leagues in Europe based on the UEFA Country Coefficients System.
The Leagues we’ll be considering for our top 18 best keepers in Europe 2023 include:
- The Premier League
- Spanish La Liga
- Serie A
- Bundesliga
- Ligue 1
We’ve seen various best goalkeepers in the world rankings described as lopsided as the goalkeepers in the small sides are not considered.
Well, very little can be done about this. It’s a no-brainer that these shot-stoppers in the small sides usually have the highest number of saves and fewer clean sheets due to the quality of opponents they face, especially the newly promoted sides.
One major highlight was in the 2020/21 Premier League season where West Bromwich Albion’s Sam Johnstone made the most saves with 166, followed by Sheffield United’s Aaron Ramsdale and Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez with 147 and 142 respectively. However, the first two were relegated to the Championship with the clubs at the end of the season.

- Portugal Primeira LIga Standings
- English Premier League Standings
- Italian Serie A Standings
- French Ligue 1 Standings
- Spanish La Liga Standings
- MLS Standings
However, a look at the clean sheet stats saw Premier League Champions Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson Moraes come out tops with a whopping 19 to his name. Therefore, the save metrics don’t really count for much when deciding on the best goalkeepers in the world.
Regardless, we’re looking forward to the 2022/23 season to see the goalies that make our list and lead our top 10 best keepers in Europe in 2023 ranking as well as the best goalkeepers in the world ranking in 2023.
