Guardiola praises Torres, eyes PSG challenge at the Etihad

Man City boss Pep Guardiola has praised Ferran Torres after his performance in the Premier League game against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park, describing it as his best in a Manchester City shirt.

Torres was one of the eight changes for the game and recovered from a shaky start to impress as he made himself the main man for every attack that was launched by the Citizens.

He put his name on the scoresheet 80 seconds after Aguero’s opener by bending a lovely effort into the corner to ensure a 2:0 win that moved them closer to the 2020/21 Premier League title.

It was a brilliant display from the Spaniard and the goal was his 10th of the season and this is a good one for his first season after making the move from Valencia.

Guardiola didn’t hide his admiration for the player’s performance and praise him for being more physical, an aspect that has been lacking from his previous games.

The manager said: “Brilliant, Ferran scores a lot of goals but today was the first game I saw he handles what it means to play the physicality of the Premier League. He was a little boy now is a man.
“When you have this physicality, the Premier League always has a man to beat, he was more aggressive. The numbers for the minutes he plays for scoring is incredible.”

Guardiola also praised Benjamin Mendy for doing well against Andros Townsend and setting up Aguero’s opener.
“Benjamin repeats the game he played against Leicester, both fantastic,” he said.

“He scored against Leicester and today he assists. He’s a guy nothing special in the changing room, he played really well, really really well.”

Man City are close to a treble and Guardiola praised the side whilst looking forward to the UCL semifinal return leg against Paris Saint-Germain at the Etihad on Tuesday.

He said: “Everybody knows we are living something special, we are one step to be Champions again. Three in four years in this country is more than remarkable. We play the semi final of the Champions League to reach for the first time this club.

“First we have to do our job on Tuesday to do the almost perfect performance to reach the final. We play a team with the most talents up front, not just one, two players but three or three and a half, they can win the game in a single action. We have to play in a team with a mentality to win the game.

“If you think about defenders, you have to be more aggresive without the ball to win the game. That’s why the commitment for everyone is there, we try to do a best selection as possible to win the game.”
