The elite sides in La Liga have seen their standards drop this season such that even when they are given a lifeline, they just can’t take advantage and this has been the story of Barcelona in recent weeks.
Barca manager Ronald Koeman has now admitted that it will be very difficult for his side to win La Liga this season as they failed to beat Levante but squandered their lead twice which resulted in a 3 all draw.
It was a must-win game for the Catalans and many thought it was done after they raced into a 2 nil lead at halftime only to see the home side mount a comeback and make it 2 all. Ousmane Dembele scored the third to make it 3:2 but substitute Sergio Leon equalized and grabbed a point for Levante.
Therefore, Koeman’s men are 1 point behind league leaders Atletico Madrid and 1 point above Real Madrid.
Both sides currently have 3 more games to go while Barca have 2 to go. Atletico Madrid will host Real Sociedad on Wednesday whilst Real Madrid will visit Granada on Thursday.
After the game, the Dutch manager said: “The league is more complicated now. The objective was to win all three games, but now it is very difficult.”
When questioned about his future at Camp Nou, he added: “As a coach you are the most responsible.
“Coaches are always questioned. I understand that questions are being asked. I understand perfectly.
“We are very disappointed with the result.”
Koeman said: “We were good in the first half but in the second half we lost a lot of dangerous balls, we lowered the intensity. We made a lot of mistakes in defence. We were not attentive.
“The games last 90 minutes and we lost a lot in the second half. It is very disappointing. It is difficult to explain what has happened.
“We were 0-2. You don’t expect a draw.”
Levante coach Paco Lopez said: “The feelings weren’t bad despite the 0-2 (half-time score). We made the players see it and we had to have faith. We were effective in the second half.
“Sergio had had many minutes in which he was not successful, but today he has given us a point.”
Barcelona will now be hoping for the two Madrid sides to falter in their upcoming games. There is also a Sevilla lurking around the corner.
