Lionel Messi – It would have been crazy not to be in the World Cup

Lionel Messi has said that it would have been crazy if Argentina had missed out on the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia after he went into god mode and hit a hat-trick against Ecuador away from home to single-handedly secure the ticket for his nation.

Argentina ran the risk of not making it to Russia 2018, and this seemed to be compounded by the opening seconds goal by the Ecuadorians. It would have been the La Albiceleste’s first absence from the World Cup finals since 1970.

In the course of an interview after sealing qualification for Argentina, Messi said:

“There was always the fear of coming here to play. Luckily, we could react and we managed to play well.

“We were calm, we achieved the goal and that is the most important thing. Thanks to God, we fulfilled the objective.

“It would have been crazy not to be in the World Cup. The group deserved to qualify.”

Lionel Messi would have definitely been the most hit by the World Cup miss, as he would be 35 by the time the next World Cup would be hosted by Qatar in 2022. He now has the chance to put up a performance that would enable his side go one better in Russia after narrowly missing out on the World Cup trophy in Brazil in 2014.

His performance on the night could be interpreted as a perfect response to FIFA president Gianni Infantino’s suggestion that the Argentine must win the World Cup to attain the status of the greatest player ever.
