Rangnick – McTominay is a future Man United captain

Manchester United interim boss Ralf Rangnick has praised Scotland star Scott McTominay as he was on target for the Red Devils on Monday and also led the side to victory against their Premier League rivals.

McTominay wore the captain’s armband against Aston Villa in the third round of the FA Cup and the United side came out tops with a 1 nil victory at Old Trafford on Monday.

He scored the only goal of the game and it was his second goal for the club in the last 3 games. He scored with a fine header 8 minutes into the game. However, Villa found the back of the net twice in the second half but had both goals disallowed.

Speaking shortly after the game, Rangnick said in a chat with BBC Sport after being asked about the player’s performance: “He is an academy boy, his energy is amazing,”

“He now also starts scoring goals and also with some leadership skills. I wouldn’t be surprised if in a couple of years he would be the captain of this team.”

It can be recalled that McTominay also found the back of the net and the opener in the 3:1 Premier League win against Burnley at the end of December. Rangnick went on to applaud United shot-stopper David de Gea whose key saves key Villa at bay and hindering their chances of getting back into the game.

“We have to develop the team into a clean sheet team and that was another one today, but still David de Gea was outstanding again for me today,” he added.

“I would have wanted him to have less saves in total, I think we had four or five shots on goal, but again we can still improve even in that area.”
