The top 10 national football teams with the most trophies

The intent and purpose of every football national team representing a sovereign nation on the biggest of stages like the FIFA World Cup, COPA America, UEFA European Championship, AFCON, AFC Asian Cup, and other contested and reputable football competitions, is to win it.

In every organized football competition, some teams are more powerful and favorites to win it but occasionally, football dazzles us with giant killers.

While the winning mentality is distinctive quality and a unique characteristic that differentiate men from the boys, favorite from minnows, contenders from pretenders in the biggest gathering of football elites, it won’t be out of place to elucidate the world around us with the chronicle of football nations who have had a successful outing/achievement in every notable football tournament.

10. CAMEROON (6 TROPHIES)

The Indomitable Lions are not minnows in world football. They are one of the leading football nations in the continent of Africa and a well-respected football team in the world at large. Cameroon is the second most successful country in the continent behind Egypt with 5 AFCON wins.

Cameroon in the past had an array of talented footballers plying their trade mostly in European clubs. Players like Samuel Eto’o Fils, Patrick Mboma, Geremi Njitap, Rigobert Song, and other fine footballers.

However, they’re not finding it easy like before because of the dwindling talents. Regardless, their football situation is that they’re still not a side that can be pushed aside, they’re still a decent side that could contend with the best of teams in the football world.

9. ITALY  (7 TROPHIES)

This list cannot be considered a perfect one without acknowledging the current Champions of European football Italy. the Azzurri’s clinched the UEFA European Championship at the expense of the Three Lions of England under the tutelage of Roberto Mancini.

The former Manchester City gaffer took charge of the Italy job after an uninspiring outing in the 2014 World Cup where they left the Mundial at the group stages. Since the moment Roberto took over the job, the Italian national team have been imperious. He’s the man behind the Azzurri‘s 37-match unbeaten run since their last loss: a 1-0 defeat to Portugal on Sept. 10, 2018.

The streak was broken on October 6, 2021, when Spain defeated them in Milan in a 2-1 UEFA Nations League semifinal win. As far as football records are concerned, the Italians’ 37-match unbeaten record remains a remarkable feat.

Considering Italy’s solidity and unbeaten runs with their recent European championships success, Roberto has achieved more than enough with the Azzurri. There are indications that their union would last longer. The focus now is to go to Qatar 2022 and add to the four world cups they have already won.

8. THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA (6 TROPHIES)

The Americans are not vast or consistent in producing world-class talents when it comes to football but they’ve had the fortune of having some decent legs in the past like Clint Dempsey, Landon Donovan, Tim Howard (a brilliant sweeper for the Toffees), Micheal Bradley, DeMarcus Beasley, Claudio Reyna coupled with the new crop of talented young lads they have currently.

It seems the god of soccer is looking in their direction again. The US national team couldn’t have been luckier with the current youngsters. The good thing about those players is that they’re very young and active in their respective clubs and most of them are plying their trade in the top leagues in Europe.

Out of the pool of talented players are Weston McKennie of Juventus, Sergino Dest of Barcelona, Christian Pulisic of Chelsea, Giovanni Reyna of Dortmund, and Tyler Adams of RB Leipzig.

7. EGYPT  (7 TROPHIES)

The Pharaohs of Egypt cannot be overlooked when mentioning a national team with the achievement of international laurels. If you call them the kings of African football, you’re not wrong for doing so because of their successful imprint on the continent.

The Egyptians have been remarkably outstanding in the continent by winning AFCON 7 times, the closest country to them is Cameroon with five. Despite their dominance in the continent of Africa, they’ve not been able to break the jinx internationally especially at the World Cup.

Just like every other footballing nation preparing for Qatar 2022, Egypt is also on the path to being among those nations eyeing and vying for the most sought-after international trophy if they qualify.

The Pharaohs may not have gotten superstars in every department but they have an outstanding goal poacher doing wonders for Liverpool in Mohamed Salah. they would be hopeful and counting on their most promising jewel and pray he’s not knocked down by injury and stay fit for the tournament come next year in Qatar.

6. FRANCE (8 TROPHIES)

Despite being tipped as The Euro 2020 favorites ahead of other countries participating, France were unable to live up to that projection, unfortunately, Lè Bleus will want to put their bad outing behind them.

The French national team set up is a collection of talented footballers, the oozing of the brilliance of each and everyone is a pointer with the likes of Kylian Mbappe, N’Golo Kante, Karim Benzema, Antoine Griezmann, Paul Pogba, and a host of other brilliant legs.

Former world cup champion in Russia 2018 would like to put the bad outing of Euro 2020 behind them and try to forge a new motivation for the loudest international tournament in Qatar 2022.

5. GERMANY (9 TROPHIES )

Die Mannschaft, as they are usually called, without any iota of doubt are one of the most successful footballing nations in the world, and as a matter of fact, their mouthwatering achievement on the biggest of stages like the world cup which they have won four times is an indication of their successes over the years.

They also jointly hold the record with Spain as the European Championship winners. They have won it three times.
Germany in every tournament are always considered a favorite because of how they often bring their best game to the fore with a unique fighting spirit without forgetting their sound technicality when participating for the big prize on the biggest stage.

The Qatar 2022 World Cup is upon us. Just like any other favorite, Germany would aspire to add to the four they already won and to go all out to win their fifth world cup title with a mixture of their young and old talented legs full of experience. The last time Germany won the world cup was in 2014 in Brazil.

4. MEXICO (12 Trophies)

When mentioning a country that knows how to nurture and produce talented footballers, Mexico is definitely one of those nations. Claudio Suarez, Jorge Campos, Cuauhtemoc Blanco, Hugo Sanchez, Javier Hernandez, Santos, and Raphael Marquez were some of the brilliant and talented legs that took El Tri to the forefront of the game.

Mexico are the most successful country in the North American continent. Their successes can be attributed to their winning of the Gold Cup which they have won a record 11 times with their recent one in 2015 and 2019.
Unfortunately, they’ve not been doing well at the biggest of stages.

They’ve never won the biggest international laurel before which is the FIFA World Cup. the closest they’ve been was getting to the world cup glory in 1970 and 1986 which they reached the quarter-finals respectively. The only recognizable FIFA tournament they’ve been able to clinch was the 1999 Confederations Cup they hosted, they beat Brazil 4 goals to 3 in the final.

Mexico would also test their mettle again at FIFA World Cup in Qatar, the question is, are they potent enough to challenge for it this time?

3. URUGUAY (19 Trophies)

La Celeste of Uruguay are a team with a pedigree that cannot be doubted when talking about international football. No question, the team have always been among the elites right from the yesteryears of their world cup triumph in 1930 and 1950.

Uruguay, since then, have experienced a world cup drought since they last won it back to back. The last time they won international laurels was in 2011 Copa America.

Despite their drought at the biggest of stages, it doesn’t take away the fact that Uruguay could bring another dimension to the next world cup in 2022 when Qatar host the event.

The country is blessed with young, talented, and fast rising footballers like Federico Valverde, Jose Gimenez, Brian Rodriguez, and Maxi Gomez without forgetting their wealth of experienced players like Diego Godin, Edison Cavani, Luis Suarez, Lucas Torreira, and a host of other brilliant legs getting ready to take them far and probably win it.

2. ARGENTINA (22 TROPHIES )

La Albiceleste are blessed with staggering and amazing footballers both in the past and present who have had a great impact on their football at the national level. Their great number of successes is an attestation to this. We can not mention Argentina’s trophy successes without referencing those who made it a reality. Players like late Diego Maradona, and current wizard, Lionel Messi, to mention a few.

The last time Albiceleste came close to winning the world cup was in 2014, they were denied by Germany in the final. Significant laurels have eluded the South American giant for quite some time, according to record, Argentina have failed to clinch a major championship since 1993 until July 2020 that their trophy drought was erased when La Pulga and company gallantly won Copa America at the Maracana stadium in Brazil after 27 years of waiting.

With the FIFA World Cup fast approaching in Qatar, Argentina would definitely go into the Mundial brimming with a lot of confidence with the intention to win the most coveted football laurel in the world.

1. BRAZIL – (19 TROPHIES )

When we talk about a football household name or national side with an astonishing achievement in a major international tournament, the name of Brazil can not be far from the discussion. Without any doubt, the Selacao have been proving to be the most accomplished national side since the 1930s.

Whenever an international tournament like the world cup is talked about or hosted, Brazil without a doubt are always considered favorites because of their track records and pedigree, they are the most successful national side to have won the trophy on five occasions.

it’s no surprise that they’re the most successful nation in football history. The Selecao are regarded as a talent Bank for most football clubs in the world due to their consistent nurturing and production of fantastic players who have in turn helped them revolutionize the game with their unique talents for years.

Over the years, Brazil have been blessed with football greats like Pele, Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Ronaldinho, and many other household names from Brazil. Brazil, in recent times, haven’t been doing well in the tournament.

The last time they won it was in 2002 but we can be rest assured that the Selacao would compete favorably at the next edition of the WorldCup tournament in Qatar 2022 with the likes of Neymar Da Silva and a host of other arrays of talent and experienced legs like Thiago Silva leading them to the podium of glory once again after 19 years they last won it in Korea/Japan.
