Zenit Saint Petersburg president Alexander Metvedev has confirmed that the Russian club are in advanced negotiations to sign Brazilian attacker Malcom from Barcelona.
An eventual move will bring the player’s nightmare stay under Ernesto Valverde at the Camp Nou to an end.
Barcelona gazumped Roma to sign Malcom from Bordeaux in a £36.5 million deal almost a year ago. This was after the Serie A outfit had already announced that they had signed the Brazilian.
However, the player didn’t hit the ground running at Barcelona. He made just 6 starts in the La Liga and a further 9 appearances as a substitute. He played just 608 La Liga minutes for Barcelona.
The addition of Antoine Griezmann will even restrict him to lesser minutes and push him further down the pecking order.
Metvedev stated that Zenit are very close to landing the Brazilian although the asking price for the player is too high, per Fontanka (h/t Sport):
“Negotiations for Malcom are advanced with Barcelona, and we’re going through an active and decisive phase.”
Before the move to Barcelona, Malcom was one of the sought-after wingers in Europe after establishing himself at Bordeaux in 2 and a half seasons in the Ligue 1 between 2016 and 2018.
Although the player has failed to hit the limelight at the Nou Camp, he undoubtedly has quality and this was proved in Barca’s gazumping of Roma for his signature.
This might not be the biggest of moves but it could be what he needs. Zenit will also participate in the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League. The player can pick up from where he left before joining Barcelona at the Gazprom Arena.
