Top four spot, a goal for Timo Werner, and a rare clean sheet for Kepa Arrizabalaga.
Chelsea moved above Liverpool and into the top four for the first time in more than three months with a 2-0 win over Newcastle.
It was their fourth straight win under new manager Thomas Tuchel. It was an important win, albeit against a team placed at the bottom half of the league standings.
Questions will be asked regarding Chelsea’s chances of remaining top four at the end of the season. It will be an exciting prospect for UEFA Champions League betting as all the top ten sides have a chance to make it into the top four.
The most important statistic is that Tuchel’s side picked all three points, but there were some notable positives to take home.
The most expensive goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaba was picked ahead of the more-reliable Edouard Mendy – and he delivered. He not only ensured Chelsea won all the points, but he denied Newcastle strikers throughout the evening to keep a rare clean sheet.
When former manager Frank Lampard brought in Mendy from Rennes, Kepa had become almost synonymous with howlers. Whether it was just a dip in form or lack of confidence, Tuchel will be cautious on who he employs between the posts.

There was another positive, this time from new Chelsea striker Timo Werner. The former RB Leipzig marksman has not found life any easy at Stamford Bridge, despite making a promising start in the summer of 2020.
He scored Chelsea’s second to end a 14-match goal drought that saw a lot of criticism leveled against him over the last few months. He also put in a man-of-the-match performance against the Magpies.
“I think as a striker, you always want to score. The last month I was not happy about not scoring, but it’s a team sport and when we win, everything is good.” Said Werner after the Newcastle match. “When I help my team with assists, winning penalties and now with scoring, I’m happy.”
“For a striker, it’s much worse when you don’t come into the situation and you don’t have chances. I had a lot of chances and I missed them. Today my team brought me a lot of situations where I could score and that’s the important thing for me.”
Fans will be left with questions over why Olivier Giroud keeps getting overlooked for Chelsea despite always doing what is expected of him. Giroud only started due to Tammy Abraham’s injury, and he scored the first goal. The Blues have a new manager who will be watched keenly as he manages his forwards.
There was no place for summer signing and former Ajax Amsterdam winger Hakim Ziyech, and the ever-lively Christian Pulisic. Mateo Kovacic, Jorginho, and Mason Mount started ahead of N’Golo Kante, but lack of forward movement was conspicuous before the diminutive Frenchman was introduced in the second half to spark life into the team.
Jorginho cannot seem to score except penalties, Mount is not the man to rise to the occasion when goals cannot come from strikers, and Kovacic is not made for that either. Tuchel will need to have his midfield contributing more goals going forward.
Chelsea’s next assignment is an away Premier League tie against Southampton on Saturday before traveling to Atletico Madrid on Tuesday in the first leg fixture UEFA Champions League. You can bet on all these matches with Betway for the broadest market options and the best odds.
